The History of Acid Rain
Coal first began to enter the earth's atmosphere during the Industrial revolution. In this period the mass production of goods were produced and all of this was powered by coal. Due to this, large amounts entered the earth's atmosphere. Acid Rain was first discovered by a Scottish Chemist, Robert Angus Smith (1817-1884). In 1852, Smith discovered the relationship between acid rain and atmospheric pollution in Manchester, England. Although the relationship was discovered in the 1800's, it did not gain public attention until 1960. In 1972, the name "acid rain" was given.
