Prevention
There are
many preventative measures that could be implemented to eliminate the
occurences of acid rain, or even reduce it. These measures include:
Burning less fossil fuels, will decrease the amount of acidic substances entering the atmosphere and decrease the reoccurrence of acid rain. This could be achieved through the government sourcing alternative fuels which are more eco-friendly, taking public transport, walking instead of using cars and car-pooling Conserving energy would reduce the Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen oxide emissions entering the atmosphere because the primary energy sources are derived from fossil fuels. This could be achieved through using more efficient motors and electrical devices. Spreading awareness of the issue would provoke people to take action as it is a serious issue in society. Although it is not such a large issue in Australia, spreading awareness of the dangers could reduce the chances of future occurrences. The government could provide funding and invest in alternative fuel sources which are more environmentally friendly. The Australian Labor Governemnt in 2012, introduced a carbon tax with an aim to reduce Carbon emissions and if it worked, it could have reduced sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions because they are found in fossil fuels. Also, funding could be directed at removing the Sulphur from coal before burning. To reduce the damage to ecosystems, equalizing the acidity in water systems could reduce the negative impact on biodiversity. This could be done through using powdered limestone (which contains Calcium Carbonate (base)) |
